Baithak Series is a thematic concert series aimed at presenting esoteric topics on Indian classical music in an engaging and accessible manner. Baithaks, essentially chamber concerts, are a traditional way of presenting Indian classical music to create an intimate connection between the audience and the artist through smaller venues with both floor and chair seating.

Rāgas are the core melodic principle of both the Hindustānī (Northern) and Karṇaṭak (Southern) musical systems. Their diverse forms reflect the complexity of human expression. Through his improvisational elaborations, Hindustānī vocalist Akhil Jobanputra will explore the breadth and depth of a few rāgas, both common and uncommon, attempting to answer the question “what is a rāga?”. Akhil will present rāgas in both the Dhrūpada and Ḳhayāl idioms, in his musical explorations. He will introduce and demonstrate core building blocks of rāgas in an attempt to better understand the unique grammatical and aesthetic conditions of each rāga. This concert is a Praveśikā, marking a musical evolution in the artistic journey of Akhil Jobanputra under the tutelage of Pandit Arijit Mahalanabis of the Society of Indian Music and Arts (SIMA).

Akhil Jobanputra is a young student, performer, educator, and curator of Indian classical music. Learning since the age of three, he has been receiving intensive training under masters Pandit Arun Dravid and Pandit Arijit Mahalanabis since the past six years. Akhil is a practitioner of various sub-genres of Hindustani music, including Dhrupada and Khayal, and is influenced by his exposure to multiple gharanas (stylistic disciplines). His repertoire features a mix of centuries-old rare and common traditional compositions and a range of contemporary pieces, including his own, primarily rooted in the aesthetics of the Jaipur-Atrauli tradition. He has performed across Canada, the US, India, and the U.K. with notable performances for 'Chaar Prahar Festival 2020' (Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan & Sneh Arts), and for 'Parāśakti: The Flame Within' (Chan Centre for the Performing Arts, Canada) - a unique production conceptualized and co-directed by Akhil. Tejas Tope on Pakhavaj/Tabla, a disciple of Pandit Samir Chatterjee and Ustad Zakir Hussain, and Kishan Patel on Esraj, a disciple of Pandit Arijit Mahalanabis, will join Akhil on stage.
