The Salon Series presents three, 1-hour-long recitals by local Indian classical performing artists whose years of dedicated study, training, and performance have shaped distinctive artistic voices. Presented across July, September, and October, the series offers audiences a closer encounter with the depth, nuance, and evolving traditions of Indian classical music and dance as embodied in the practice of our artists.
Our inaugural recital features Vancouver Bharatanatyam artist Sujit Vaidya in a full margam, performed to live Carnatic music. Sujit Vaidya is an independent dance artist based on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations (Vancouver), trained in Bharatanatyam. The choreography for this program is by A. Lakshman.
As a performer and interpreter, Sujit has worked primarily as a soloist across Canada, the United States, Europe, and India, and has collaborated with collectives and companies in Chennai, Vancouver, Toronto, Seattle, San Francisco, and Washington, DC. His choreographic works include OFF CENTRE (2018), Sacred Sacrilegious (2021), and Breathe In The Fragrance (2023).
The evening follows the margam, moving from an alarippu invocation through the emotional arc of the varnam to a thillana that builds toward a final rhythmic crescendo, exploring śṛṅgāra: desire in its many shades of longing, devotion, anticipation, intimacy, and surrender. Sujit is joined by Curtis Andrews (mridangam), Arno Kamolika (nattuvangam), Sheema Balakrishnan (vocals), and Shriram Rajagopalan (violin).
The Salon Series continues with Palak Dhiman (September 10) and Shoumi Roy (October 24); tickets are available for each concert individually or as a series pass for all three.
