Manipuri dance is one of the major Indian classical dance forms named after the region of its origin – Manipur, a beautiful land that is rich in artistic expression, tucked away in the northeastern hills of the Indian subcontinent. Manipuri is a free-flowing dance form with wave-like movements. A unique feature of this dance form is the contrast between lasya and tandava aspects. Arno Kamolika, who began her dance career as a student and practitioner of Manipuri dance, will walk us through her journey with this dance form. Join us for a unique experience of Manipuri dance in this interactive session with an introduction to the technique, history and musicality of this form. The session will start with demonstrations and discussions centred around the theme, followed by an open-floor Q&A.

This program is presented by the Indian Classical Music Society of Vancouver (ICMSV) and Kalāvāṇī Institute, with generous funding from the Vancouver Foundation's LEVEL BIPOC Grant and the City of Vancouver's Communities and Artists Shifting Culture Grant, and the support of Zameen Art House.
