Violin with Shriram Rajagopalan
Curious about Indian Classical Music? Come learn about this beautiful musical culture with the Indian Classical Music Society of Vancouver. Each month we’ll introduce a new instrument and explore its role in the many forms of Indian Classical Music.
This month we'll be exploring the violin with the versatile and accomplished Carnatic violinist Shriram Rajagopalan. Together, we’ll learn the history of how this European instrument was adapted for Indian music, discuss the culture surrounding violin in India, and listen to a demonstration of the instrument. This class is designed to introduce beginners to Indian Classical Music, as well as deepen the enjoyment and understanding for long-time fans.
Trained under Guru Nellai Ravindran for over twenty years, Shriram Rajagopalan’s foundation is firmly grounded in the rich traditions of Carnatic music, built on a pursuit of excellence. He further refined his craft through advanced training in violin under the tutelage of the legendary Padma Bhushan MS Gopalakrishnan and Kalaimamani Dr. Narmadha. It was under their guidance that Shriram embraced the renowned Parur Baani style - known for its rigor, clarity, and precise melodic expressions. His recent performances include prestigious events such as the Stand Festival, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s Day of Music, and the Mustari Begum Festival. He has also performed in the last two seasons of ICMSV’s annual Sahabhāva festival. A sought-after teacher of Carnatic violin, Shriram imparts his knowledge of the instrument to aspiring students.
