Mohiniyattam with Saritha Rajesh
Have you ever experienced the history and artistry of Indian Classical Dance? Come learn about this culture of movement with the Indian Classical Music Society of Vancouver and Aṣṭa Alliance! The fourth program in this ongoing series will feature Mohiniyattam, a classical dance form from Kerala, presented by dance educator and practitioner Saritha Rajesh.
Mohiniyattam is one of India's classical dance forms from the southwestern coast of the Indian subcontinent, distinguished by its gentle, swaying movements and deeply expressive lasya (soft, lyrical) quality. Its name draws from Hindu classical tradition, Mohini being a figure of divine grace and enchantment, and the dance itself reflects that essence, captivating through subtlety and elegance rather than spectacle.
Saritha Rajesh was born in Kerala and has studied and practiced Mohiniyattam alongside other Indian classical traditions throughout her dance journey. With over two decades of performing and teaching in the Lower Mainland, she brings both deep personal connection to this form's roots and a rich cross-traditional perspective on what makes Mohiniyattam so distinctive.
